Second Year-2001

Keeping in view the basic objectives of the Trust, the Satkal Annual Function is held at different places every year. The Second Annual Function was hosted by Punjabi University, Patiala on 5.11.2001. Nearly 200 librarians from all over the state working in various colleges, Central State Library, schools and universities of the region participated in this gala function. Dr. Amrik Singh, former Vice­Chancellor, Punjabi University, Patiala and an eminent educationist, in his inaugural speech lauded the role of women Librarians and also underlined the role of librarians in building good institutions of learning. The function was presided over by Dr. Jasbir Singh Ahluwalia the then Vice-Chancellor, Punjabi University, Patiala. Mr. A.R. Sethi, President of the Satkal Trust and Mrs. Devinder Kaur, the Organising Secretary of the Satkal Function 2001 welcomed the guests.Prof. P.B. Mangla, former Dean and Professor of Library and Information Science, University of Delhi, delivered the Annual Lecture on 'Information Science Education in India in the New Millennium: Trends and Issues'. He expressed that librarianship as a profession had largely emerged from the adolescent age in India; library schools had certainly made vital contribution in the process. Prof. P.N. Kaula was the guest of honour.
A set of Punjabi University publications was presented to the dignitaries.
Prof. Sabir Hussain from Aligarh Muslim University and Mr. S.C. Uppal, Librarian, Dr. M.S. Randhawa Library, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana also graced the occasion. Sardar Sohan Singh from the USA, and friends and family of Prof. Jagindar Singh Ramdev also graced the occasion and were honoured. The Panel Discussion on the theme 'Status of Academic Librarians' was anchored by Dr. R.G. Parashar, Visiting Professor in the Department of Library & Information Science of the University.
The Satkal Awards for the year 2001 were presented to the following distinguished professionals:

   Ms. A.K. Anand, Former University Librarian, Panjab University, Chandigarh
   Young Librarian Award
   Dr. Jagdish Arora, Deputy Librarian, IIT Delhi
   Punjab Librarian Award
   Dr. P.S.G. Kumar, University Librarian and Prof. & Head, Dept. of Library & Information Science,Nagpur                   University,Nagpur.
Dr. Jagtar Singh, Reader, Department of Library & Information Science compeered the Annual Ranghanathan Quiz on Library and Information Science. Teams, from the Departments of Library & Information Science of the Universities of Punjab, Punjabi, GNDU, Jammu, Srinagar, Kurukshetra and Delhi, participated in this quiz. The students of Punjabi University, Patiala won the running trophy. Prof. S.P. Narang, Dean, Faculty of Education and Information Science gave away the mementoes to the participants A book, Libraries and the Culture of Knowledge: An Indian Retrospective from Ancient to Modern Time
by Dr. H.S. Chopra, Deputy Librarian, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar was also released during the function.      Professor H.R. Chopra, Secretary of the Satkal Trust proposed vote of thanks.
