Fourth Year-2003

The Fourth SATKAL Annual Function was organized at Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar on 16.12.2003. The Organising Secretary Dr. M.P. Satija welcomed the guests and Dr. (Mrs.) Devinder Kaur, President of the SATKAL Trust introduced to the august audience the activities of the trust during the last four years. The Patron of the Trust Professor Jagindar Singh Ramdev narrated some anecdotes from his life and "This little Man", in his own words carried the day as everyone in the audience-students, professionals, teachers-were in awe of such a great man, who could sacrifice all his savings to ensure that librarianship proliferates and prospers not merely in this country but also overseas. Padam shree Prof. P.N. Kaula and his friend Principal Ram Sarup Sharma paid rich tributes to Mrs. Satinder Kaur Ramdev. The Vice-Chancellor, honoured Professor Jagindar Singh Ramdev with an Insignia of Guru Nanak Dev University and spoke very high of him of his services as Deputy Librian of Punjab University, Chandigarh when he happens to be a student for his P.H.D thesis. The Vice-Chancellor Dr. S.P. Singh presided over the function and Dr. Satinder Singh, Pro-Vice-Chancellor was the chief guest on this occasion. The Annual SATKAL lecture was to be delivered by Dr. T.A.V. Murthy, Director, INFLIBNET on 'Emergence of E-Learning and Networking' but he could not be present due to indisposition. Honourable Prof. P.N. Kaula spoke on the status of education, book culture and the libraries in the country. Many librarians of the region attended the function. The panel discussion on 'Bridging the Info Divide was held in the afternoon session and was anchored by Dr. Jagtar Singh. Other panelists included Dr. H.S. Chopra, Prof. I.V. Malhan, Prof. Sewa Singh; Dr. M.P. Satija and other distinguished librarians.
The SATKAL Awards for the year 2003 were presented to the following distinguished professionals:

 Woman Librarian Award
Ms. Sangeeta Kaul, Network Manager, DELNET, New Delhi.
 Young Librarian Award
Dr. Dinesh K. Gupta, Reader, DLIS, Kota Open University, Kota.
 Punjab National Librarian Award
Dr. T.A.V. Murthy, Director, INFLIBNET, Ahmedabad.
The Vice-Chancellor honoured Professor Jagindar Singh Ramdev during the function. Professor H.R. Chopra compered the Annual Ranganathan Quiz on Library and Information Science. Teams from the Departments of Library and Information Science of the Universities of Punjab, Punjabi, GNDU, Jammu, Srinagar, Kurukshetra and Delhi, participated in this quiz. The students from the DLIS, Panjab University, Chandigarh won the running trophy. Ms. Meenu Sharma also compered the programme. Dr. (Mrs.) Amritpal Kaur proposed a Vote of Thanks.
